“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”
You know that moment of conviction when you know you did something wrong? Magnify that! One bite, one second of “I know better”—and everything changed in an instant. It was like someone flipped a light switch in a room that they’d never seen before. They saw sin for the first time.
What was it? Themselves! Shame. Their action of disobedience led to their “I AM BAD, Unworthy—I’ll never measure up.” It became about “I” and “me,” making everything about us. While guilt says “I did something bad,” shame says “I am bad.”
They were exposed! So what did they do? They did what they thought was the good thing to do. They covered themselves up in an attempt to be recognized as good.
The Recognition Cover-Up
No one wants to be exposed, but everyone wants to be recognized. The recognition is the cover-up—success, money, material things, relationships, gossip, and even doing “good” things. Yes, even good things! Did you know you can do good things and still miss God?
Prior to eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, there was only one choice: God. Now there can be three: Good, Evil, or God. Service to Him can never replace intimacy with Him. Our service should result from our intimacy. Think of it like this:
Intimacy is the well; service is the bucket. You cannot pour from an empty source. Are we so caught up in covering ourselves in “the good” that we are missing out on God? We can fool others and even ourselves, for a while. We can never fool God. Living one way on the outside and feeling another on the inside will only last for so long.
The Fact Check: You Can’t Hide
If you think you’ve successfully hidden, let’s do another fact check. The Bible is clear that our “fig leaves” don’t actually work:
- Psalm 139:7 — “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Fact: You can’t hide from the One who is everywhere).
- Proverbs 28:13 — “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Fact: Covering up stops your progress; exposure leads to mercy).
- Luke 12:2 — “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.” (Fact: The cover-up is only temporary).
Hebrews 4:13 says everything is “uncovered and laid bare.”
Next, we’ll see what happened when the voice of God called out into the hiding place.
